Sports Betting Games to Bet on - March 9th Edition
March 9th 2009
Championship Week has finally arrived for the major conferences in college basketball. These postseason games don’t necessarily get the attention they deserve with March Madness looming on the horizon. Just don’t tell the players that. The stakes are very high for this week’s college hoops action as far as they and their coaches are concerned; we’re right there with them as we double down on college hoops for this week’s Top 5 betting games. All times are Eastern, with the latest betting lines available at Bet Online Sportsbook.
1. NCAAB: Virginia Tech vs. Miami (Thursday, 12:00 p.m.)
The top seeds for most of the bigger college hoops tournaments get byes into the second round, which means we don’t know, for example, who the North Carolina Tar Heels will face on Friday. We do know it’ll be one of these two teams. The No. 8 Hokies (17-13 SU, 10-15 ATS) are seeded higher than the No. 9 Hurricanes (18-11 SU, 12-11-1 ATS), and Miami lost this matchup 88-83 in overtime during the regular season as a 7-point home chalk. Otherwise, the ‘Canes appear to be the better team on paper.

2. NBA: L.A. Lakers at San Antonio (Thursday, 8:00 p.m.)
These are two of the top teams in the Western Conference, winners of seven of the last 10 NBA titles. The Spurs (42-20 SU, 32-28-2 ATS) beat Phoenix on Sunday to improve to 7-3 SU and ATS in their last 10 games. Los Angeles (50-12 SU, 32-30 ATS) has the best record in the league after winning eight of 10, although at an unprofitable 5-5 ATS. The Lakers bagged the cash in both their previous games against the Spurs this year, winning straight up at home but losing on the road.

3. NCAAB: Georgetown vs. St. John's (Tuesday, 2:00 p.m.)
The winner of this contest gets to face Marquette in the second round on Wednesday. Georgetown (16-13 SU, 8-16-1 ATS) has had a miserable season and almost certainly must win the Big East to get into the Big Dance. So do the Red Storm (15-16 SU, 11-13-1 ATS), who might not even get into the NIT after a poor campaign. But St. John’s does have one key victory to point at: Tuesday’s 59-56 overtime final over Georgetown (-6). The Hoyas were up 15 points in the second half and couldn’t hold the lead. Usually it’s the G-Town offense that has come up short; the under is on an 8-4 rampage for the Hoyas.

4. NHL: Philadelphia at N.Y. Rangers (Sunday, 12:30 p.m.)
Say what you will about Sean Avery, but the Rangers are 2-0 since the pesky left-winger was picked up off waivers from the Dallas Stars. Avery played well for the Blueshirts last year and seems to be in his natural habitat in the Big Apple. Nik Antropov is also growing accustomed to his new surroundings, scoring a goal and adding two assists in his first two shows on Broadway. The Rangers are now 3-1-1 since John Tortorella took over as coach from Tom Renney. Philadelphia has enjoyed a strong run at 9-4-1 this past month and probably won’t suffer from having to send defenseman Kyle McLaren back to San Jose following a failed physical.

5. Soccer: Inter Milan at Manchester United (Wednesday, 2:45 p.m.)
This is the second leg of the knockout stage (the Round of 16) in the Champions League. The first leg played out to a scoreless draw in Milan, so whoever wins this game will advance to the quarterfinals. A bet on United (-150), Inter (+430) or the draw (+230) is a bet on the result of the match after the regulation 90 minutes plus injury time. Inter has two options: play defensively and hope to decide the series on a shootout, or press for the away goal. Losing center backs Marco Materazzi and Nicolas Burdisso to injury in Saturday’s Serie A win over Genoa may have sealed Inter’s fate, as Christian Chivu and Walter Samuel are already unavailable at that position.
